Student project spotlight

From possibility to a living ecosystem.

This 10-photo journey follows an aquarium project created alongside an eight-year-old TheraCraft student. Each stage offered a new way to imagine, plan, test ideas, observe change, practise care and celebrate progress.

  1. Two used empty aquariums at the starting point of the student project
    Imagine

A tank waiting for a new purpose

The project began with a well-used aquarium and one big question: what could it become?

  2. Driftwood and pale stones arranged on dark aquarium substrate
    Explore

    Choosing natural materials

Driftwood and stone were compared for shape, texture, scale and the spaces they could create together.

  3. Dry aquarium hardscape built with grey stone, driftwood and dark substrate
    Design

    Building the hardscape

The student tested placement and balance, turning loose materials into a landscape with depth and focal points.

  4. Aquarium hardscape with the first green plants placed among stone and driftwood
    Plant

    Bringing in the first greenery

Live plants softened the stone and wood, adding colour while inviting careful choices about height and spacing.

  5. Newly planted aquarium with driftwood, rocks and developing aquatic plants
    Observe

    Watching the habitat settle

As the plants established, the layout became a living composition that could be observed and adjusted over time.

  6. Aquarium with colourful fish swimming around driftwood, stone and a young plant
    Care

    Welcoming aquatic life

Introducing fish transformed the project into an ecosystem and added new opportunities to learn about care and responsibility.

  7. Early completed aquarium habitat with driftwood, stone, substrate and aquarium lighting
    Reflect

    Seeing the first complete habitat

The early finished arrangement brought the original idea together and created a moment to notice what was working.

  8. Growing planted aquarium illuminated with purple-toned aquarium lighting
    Grow

    Letting the aquascape flourish

With patience and continued care, the plants filled out and the landscape developed richer colour, texture and movement.

  9. Mature aquascape with dense green plants, driftwood and balanced stones
    Refine

    Strengthening balance and depth

The mature arrangement shows how small refinements can strengthen the relationship between plants, wood, stone and open space.

  10. Finished planted aquarium glowing brightly with driftwood, rocks and lush green plants
    Celebrate

    A living project completed

The final aquarium celebrates an eight-year-old student’s creativity, planning, patience, learning and growing confidence.
